In the spring of 2018, a young Black / African American man named Paul Anthony Finegan Jr., known to his loved ones as "PJ", was tragically killed. At 23 years old, the Springfield, Massachusetts native's life was cut short on Saturday, May 5, 2018. The incident that led to his death unfolded at a child's birthday party in Springfield, a place that should have been filled with joy and celebration.
During the backyard party, an argument erupted between Finegan and another man, Terrance
Montgomery. Witnesses later testified that after a verbal exchange where Finegan insulted Montgomery, Montgomery shot Finegan in the head. Paul Finegan was unarmed at the time of the shooting. In the immediate aftermath, Montgomery fled the scene, leaving a scene of chaos and grief behind him.
Weeks after the fatal shooting, the investigation led authorities to North Carolina, where the 24-year-old suspect, Terrance Montgomery of West Springfield, was arrested. The case against Montgomery relied heavily on the accounts of eyewitnesses who were present at the crowded birthday party. Despite the defense's attempts to challenge the reliability of these testimonies, a jury found Montgomery guilty of second-degree murder. In addition to the murder conviction, he was also found guilty of two firearms charges. Subsequently, Montgomery was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving 25 years. The conviction was later reviewed by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts after an appeal was filed concerning an aspect of the jury selection process.
