On October 24, 2022, Andrew Barley, a 28-year-old male, was shot and killed in his Worcester, Massachusetts home. The incident occurred on Burncoat Street, prompting a response from Worcester Police after receiving reports of a gunshot. Upon arrival, officers found Barley with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation into Barley's death led to the identification and arrest of three men.
Berny Calderon, 25, and Kelvin Verde, 23, were charged with murder. Calderon faced additional charges of home invasion and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. A third individual, 30-year-old Luis Cotto, was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.
According to authorities, Calderon and Verde forced their way into the Burncoat Street residence and shot Barley. An autopsy revealed that a gunshot wound to his armpit was the fatal injury. Following the shooting, nearby schools were placed under lockdown. The investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the home invasion and subsequent shooting is ongoing.
Andrew Barley was a lifelong resident of Worcester and a graduate of Worcester Vocational High School. Prior to his death, he had been working in construction alongside his father. His death was described as unexpected in his obituary, which also highlighted his affectionate nicknames and his connection to the Pleasant Street Seventh Day Adventist Church.
