In the early hours of a cold December morning in Worcester, Massachusetts, the life of 35-year-old James Michael Johnson, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On December 8, 2021, Johnson and his brother, Marcus Thibodeau, were outside the Diamond Inn on Grafton Street when they were both fatally shot. The brothers had reportedly gone to the bar to celebrate Thibodeau's 27th birthday.
The evening took a fatal turn around 1:57 AM. According to police reports, after being denied entry because the bar had already announced its last call, one of the brothers knocked on a window. This seemingly minor act is believed to have angered another patron inside the establishment. Witnesses reported hearing a man make a threat following the knock. Shortly after, both Johnson and Thibodeau were found on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and the brothers were rushed to a local hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.
The investigation into the double homicide led Worcester police to a suspect months later. In April 2022, 37-year-old Christopher Burns of Worcester was arrested at his home and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the killings. Authorities pieced together the events of that night using surveillance footage, which allegedly showed Burns running to his vehicle and speeding away after the shots were fired. At his arraignment, not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf, and he was held without bail.
Initially, there was speculation that the shooting might have been connected to a previous incident involving Marcus Thibodeau. At the time of his death, Thibodeau was on bail and awaiting trial on gun charges related to a fatal shooting in Franklin the previous year, which his lawyer claimed was an act of self-defense. However, the subsequent arrest and charging of Christopher Burns pointed to a different and seemingly random motive for the violent deaths of the two brothers. The Diamond Inn, the scene of the tragedy, has since closed and reopened under new ownership.
