On the evening of August 24, 2016, a resident of Worcester, Massachusetts, 26-year-old Jose Ortiz, was shot and killed. The incident, which marked the city's sixth homicide of the year, took place at approximately 9:06 p.m. in the vicinity of 2 Elliot Street in the Bell Hill neighborhood. Ortiz, a father of two young boys, had just left his sister's home and was walking to his job as a personal care assistant.
According to police and witness accounts, a minivan pulled up alongside Ortiz
as he walked down the street. An unidentified man exited the vehicle and engaged in a heated argument with Ortiz in the middle of the road. The altercation escalated, culminating in the man firing a single shot that struck Ortiz in the chest. The shooter then got back into the minivan and fled the scene, speeding down Elliot Street and turning towards Belmont Street.
Worcester police responded to reports of a man shot and found Ortiz unconscious on the ground with a gunshot wound. First responders provided medical aid at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite their efforts, Jose Ortiz was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m. that same evening.
In the years following the shooting, the case has remained unsolved. Investigators have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Jose Ortiz. His death is noted as the only unsolved homicide in Worcester from 2016.
