In what was just his fourth day of college, Quinn Glen Cooper, an 18-year-old White male, was killed on October 1, 2015, during a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A recent graduate of Roseburg High School, he was described by his family as a funny, sweet, and compassionate young man who loved to dance and engage in voice acting.
He was also passionate about martial arts and was looking forward to testing for his brown belt.
On that tragic morning, a 26-year-old student named Chris Harper-Mercer entered a classroom and opened fire. The gunman, who was enrolled in the same class, killed an assistant professor and eight students, including Cooper. Survivors reported that before the shooting began, the perpetrator had deliberately spared one student, instructing them to deliver a package to the police. He then proceeded with the attack, shooting the professor at point-blank range.
The violent rampage ended when Roseburg police detectives responded to the scene and engaged Harper-Mercer in a shootout. After being wounded, the gunman took his own life. In the aftermath, law enforcement recovered multiple legally owned firearms from the scene and at the shooter's apartment. The investigation revealed no other suspects, and no arrests were made in connection with the shooting. The attack was the deadliest school shooting in Oregon's history.
