In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Salem, Oregon, a dispute in a strip mall parking lot escalated into deadly violence, claiming the life of 26-year-old Hispanic male Hector Martinez-Arroyo on June 18, 2017. The confrontation also resulted in the death of 50-year-old Carlos Zepeda-Ponce.
The incident unfolded outside a pool hall where witnesses reported an argument among a group of men near two parked vehicles.
Gunshots shattered the night, and a resident living across from the strip mall heard the sounds and rushed to his door. He witnessed flashes of gunfire as another round of shots was fired. Following the shooting, he saw the gunman drop the weapon and casually walk away into the surrounding neighborhood.
Law enforcement arrived at the scene to find both Martinez-Arroyo and Zepeda-Ponce with fatal gunshot wounds. One of the victims had been shot in the face. A private security guard followed the suspect until police were able to apprehend him near the scene.
The alleged shooter was identified as 35-year-old Marcelino Osorio-Jiminez. He was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of murder. While the exact circumstances that led to the fatal argument were not immediately clear, the arrest of Osorio-Jiminez brought a swift, though somber, development to the investigation of the double homicide that ended the lives of Hector Martinez-Arroyo and Carlos Zepeda-Ponce.
