In the early morning hours of August 12, 2020, the life of 24-year-old James Richard Greenwood was tragically cut short in the Parkrose neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Officers from the Portland Police Bureau were dispatched to the 11500 block of NE Sandy Boulevard at 5:48 a.m. after reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals with apparent gunshot wounds.
One of them, a male, was deceased at the scene.
The deceased was later identified as James Richard Greenwood. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's office determined that his death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. A second person found at the scene with gunshot wounds was transported to a local hospital and was expected to survive. The investigation into the shooting was swiftly undertaken by homicide detectives.
The day after the shooting, on August 13, investigators identified 29-year-old Ryan Michael Allen of Portland as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Detectives learned that Allen worked in Vancouver, Washington, and began surveillance at his job location in Hazel Dell. Later that afternoon, around 5:00 p.m., the SW Washington Regional SWAT team was called to assist Portland detectives in apprehending the suspect.
When confronted by law enforcement, Ryan Michael Allen ran into a building and barricaded himself inside a bathroom. Crisis negotiators attempted to persuade him to surrender, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Allen ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Homicide detectives with the Portland Police Bureau believe that Allen was the only suspect involved in the death of James Greenwood.
