Who murdered 20 year old Hien Minh Pham?
In the early morning hours of February 6, 1999, a night out with friends for Hien Minh Pham, a 20-year-old Asian male, ended in tragedy in a Taco Bell parking lot in Portland, Oregon. What began as a late-night food run escalated into a violent confrontation that would ultimately claim his life. The evening had been unremarkable, with Pham and his friends socializing before deciding to grab a bite to eat at the fast-food restaurant located at 4933 SE Powell Blvd.
The group traveled in two separate cars, with Hien Pham in the vehicle ahead in the drive-thru. As they waited for their food, a couple of Asian males approached the car behind Pham's, where his friends were, and began to assault the driver. Seeing his friend in trouble, Pham got out of his car to intervene. It was at this moment that he was suddenly surrounded by a larger group of six to seven other Asian males. The group proceeded to assault him, and in the ensuing chaos, he was stabbed.
Though gravely injured, Hien Pham initially survived the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically, he later succumbed to his wounds and died. The suspects, described as Asian males between the ages of 17 and 20 years old at the time and wearing red shirts and belts, fled the scene before police could arrive. They were believed to have escaped in two vehicles: a light purple Honda Civic and a dark blue Honda Accord.
In the aftermath of the deadly assault, investigators have pursued leads, including the possibility that the attack was gang-related, as it is believed that Hien Pham may have been an associate of an Asian gang and the perpetrators members of a rival group. However, despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in connection with the stabbing death of Hien Pham. The case remains an unsolved homicide, with authorities continuing to seek information from the public that might lead to the identification and apprehension of the individuals responsible for the violent and untimely end to a young man's life.
