In the early morning hours of August 17, 2021, the life of 37-year-old Quaii Jerrice Snider, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a shooting in Portland, Oregon. The incident occurred around 7:50 a.m. in the Kenton neighborhood, near a homeless encampment situated in the vicinity of North Victory Boulevard and Interstate 5. When Portland Police Bureau officers arrived at the scene, they found that Snider had sustained a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office later conducted an autopsy and officially ruled his death a homicide.
For several months, the case remained without a publicly identified suspect, leaving a void in the search for justice for Snider's death. Investigators from the Portland Police Homicide Unit diligently worked the case, seeking information from the public and piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The initial reports from law enforcement indicated that no suspect information was immediately available, and no arrests had been made in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
The investigation eventually led authorities to a 21-year-old man named Hunter Irvin Lewis. A significant detail that emerged about Lewis was his fugitive status; he had escaped from the Koochiching County Jail in Minnesota in the spring of that year. At the time of his escape from the minimum-security section of the jail, where he was facing a first-degree burglary charge, authorities believed he had fled to the West Coast, where he had known connections.
Four months after the shooting, a break in the case came when Hunter Irvin Lewis was arrested and charged in connection with Quaii Snider's murder. He was indicted on charges of second-degree murder with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon. Following his arrest, Lewis was arraigned in court, where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges brought against him.
