On the warm summer night of August 30, 2000, a gathering of friends in a parking lot on Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Portland, Oregon, turned into a scene of tragedy. Jamon Griffin, a 21-year-old African-American man, was among the group of friends enjoying the evening when, at approximately 11:25 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the peace. Multiple shots were fired into the crowd, and Jamon was struck.
