In the early morning hours of Friday, January 28, 2022, a tragic event unfolded in the Old Town area of Portland, Oregon, leading to the death of 26-year-old Jaquan Jamaul Jenkins. A Black / African American male, Jenkins was found by Portland Police officers around 2:16 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest 2nd Avenue and Couch Street, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite immediate medical aid from the officers and subsequent transportation to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner's autopsy later confirmed that Jenkins died from a gunshot wound and officially ruled his death a homicide. Investigators believe that a number of people witnessed the shooting but left the scene before speaking with law enforcement. The suspect or suspects also fled before police arrived and have not been located. As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspect information has been released to the public.
The family of Jaquan Jenkins, while grieving, has made a public plea for assistance in finding his killer. They described him as a kind person who befriended many, including those in the homeless community. Detectives from the Portland Police Homicide Unit are actively investigating the case and have urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward to help bring justice for Jaquan and his family. A reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death.
