In the early hours of March 11, 2022, a Friday, the life of 28-year-old Corey Monroe, a White/Caucasian male, was cut tragically short in a shooting at a strip mall in Gresham, Oregon, a city on the eastern edge of Portland. Just after midnight, law enforcement officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Monroe on the ground, suffering from a single gunshot wound to his chest.
Despite the gravity of his injury, Monroe was able to provide a crucial piece of information to the responding officers before he was rushed to Oregon Health & Science University for emergency medical treatment—he identified the man who had shot him. Sadly, his life could not be saved, and he succumbed to his injuries a short time later at the hospital.
The investigation into Corey Monroe's death was swift, with detectives from the Gresham Police Department and members of the East Multnomah County Major Crimes Team leading the effort. The information provided by Monroe himself, in his final moments, proved vital in identifying a suspect. Two days after the fatal shooting, on Sunday, March 13, 2022, authorities arrested 33-year-old Daniel Roy Hensley of Troutdale, Oregon, in connection with Monroe's death. Further investigation and witness statements solidified the case against Hensley.
In April 2022, a grand jury indicted Daniel Hensley for his role in the death of Corey Monroe. The legal proceedings culminated on September 20, 2023, when Hensley, then 34, appeared in a Multnomah County Circuit Court. As part of a plea agreement, Hensley pleaded guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree and one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a firearm. Following his plea, the judge sentenced Daniel Roy Hensley to 15 years in prison. He was subsequently transferred from custody in Multnomah County to the Oregon Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence.
