In a quiet, rural corner of Sheridan, Oregon, the life of 60-year-old Karen Hansen-Pieri, a White female, came to a tragic end on May 30, 2022. On that Monday evening, around 7:30 p.m., deputies from the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a large, remote property in the 11000 block of Southwest Dupee Valley Road. A 911 caller had reported discovering two deceased individuals after going to the residence to check on the animals.
Upon arrival, deputies confirmed the
caller's grim discovery. Inside the home, they found Hansen-Pieri and her husband, 80-year-old Prentis “Rusty” Hale III. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The presence of evidence suggesting the deaths were suspicious prompted the involvement of the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit. Detectives were called to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation, collecting and processing evidence.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities indicated that the deaths were likely the result of a domestic violence incident. The initial findings suggested that the shooting occurred during an episode of domestic violence, although the precise circumstances remained under investigation. The sheriff's office assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community, and information was initially withheld to allow for a preliminary investigation and to notify the next of kin, who resided out of state. Hansen-Pieri and Hale had been living together at the Dupee Valley Road property for the previous five years, a place Hale had called home for about a quarter of a century. Law enforcement records showed only one prior response to the residence in 2020, which was deemed non-criminal in nature. In the aftermath of the tragedy, there was no indication of any external suspects, and no arrests were made.
