In the fall of 2017, the life of 15-year-old Annieka Vaughan, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. The events leading to her death began on October 30, 2017, when she was reported to have run away from her home in Aloha, Oregon. She was believed to be in the company of 23-year-old Zachary Petersen of Pasco, Washington.
The two had reportedly met that August while Vaughan was visiting her mother in Kennewick, Washington.
Authorities were concerned for Vaughan's safety as Petersen was the subject of a sexual abuse investigation in which she was the victim. Petersen had also disappeared on the same day as Vaughan after making a call to a crisis line, and he was believed to be armed and possibly suicidal. A search for the pair ensued, and on November 6, Petersen's pickup truck was discovered in a gravel parking lot in Portland's Forest Park. Inside the vehicle, investigators found Vaughan's backpack, intensifying the search in the surrounding area.
On the morning of November 8, 2017, the bodies of both Annieka Vaughan and Zachary Petersen were discovered by a search and rescue dog in a wooded, steep area of Forest Park, not far from where the truck had been abandoned. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed their identities and determined that both had died from gunshot wounds.
The investigation concluded that Zachary Petersen had shot and killed Annieka Vaughan before turning the gun on himself. No other suspects were sought in connection with her death, as the case was ruled a murder-suicide. The tragic event left Vaughan's family and community mourning the loss of a young life described as artistic and full of potential.
