On August 1, 1783, a tragic event unfolded at the property of the Clay family in what is now Lake Shawnee, West Virginia. Bartley Clay, aged 17, and his sister Tabitha Clay, aged 20, were brutally killed by members of the Shawnee tribe while they were performing their daily chores on the family's land.
