On April 3, 2013, Eugene Crum, the 59-year-old sheriff of Mingo County, West Virginia, was fatally shot while sitting in his official vehicle in a parking lot at the corner of Third Avenue and Harvey Street in Williamson, West Virginia. Crum, who had been serving as sheriff since January 1, 2013, was known for his aggressive efforts to combat prescription drug abuse and crime in the region.
