On the evening of January 26, 2022, a sense of unease settled over a Princeton, West Virginia, apartment complex as Jaydon Wayne Brown, a 23-year-old Black/African American man, was found lying on the sidewalk. He had been shot. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. outside the Pepperidge Apartments located off Bratton Avenue. First responders rushed to the scene and transported Brown to Princeton Community Hospital.
From there, he was transferred to Charleston Area Medical Center for more advanced care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Jaydon Brown succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of the following day.
The Mercer County Sheriff's Department promptly launched a homicide investigation into Brown's death. Authorities canvassed the area for evidence and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. Chief Deputy A.P. Christian urged community members to come forward with any details, no matter how insignificant they might seem.
