Lyle Marpole, a 66-year-old White / Caucasian male, died on May 3, 2022, after a shooting inside a home in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The violence unfolded at a residence on Landfill Drive in Berkeley County, where Marpole and another man, 60-year-old Thomas Cox, were reported to have been living together. What began as a verbal dispute inside the home escalated into a deadly confrontation, ending with Marpole suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.
Berkeley County deputies responded to
the scene after the shooting was reported and found Marpole seriously wounded. Deputies attempted life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived, and Marpole was taken to Berkeley Medical Center. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators later said the argument between Marpole and Cox had turned violent when Cox allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot Marpole.
Authorities identified Thomas Cox as the suspect in Marpole’s death. Cox was arrested after the shooting and charged with first-degree murder. Deputies also reported recovering the firearm believed to have been used in the killing. Online incident records described Cox as an acquaintance of Marpole and listed him as arrested in connection with the case.
Outside of the criminal investigation, Marpole was remembered as Lyle Leslie Marpole II, a Martinsburg man and U.S. Navy veteran. Memorial information described him as someone with family ties in the area, including surviving daughters, and noted that he was laid to rest after a graveside service held the following month. His death left behind the quiet aftermath of a domestic-style dispute between two men who shared a home, a confrontation that ended with one man dead and the other facing a murder charge.
