In the small town of Algona, Iowa, the holiday season of 1987 came to a tragic and violent end. On December 30th, twelve-year-old Jason Chuang, a male, was found deceased alongside six of his family members in an apparent murder-suicide. The grim discovery was made at the home of his maternal grandparents, John and Agnes Dreesman, a prominent and well-regarded couple in the community.
Jason, his mother Marilyn Chuang, age 48, and his two younger siblings, eleven-year-old Jennifer and eight-year-old Joshua, had been visiting from their home in Honolulu, Hawaii for a family gathering.
The festive occasion turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. Authorities concluded that Robert Dreesman, Jason's 40-year-old uncle, was the perpetrator of the horrific act. Investigators believe that Dreesman, who was described as a reclusive and moody individual, opened fire on his family members in the dining room of his parents' home. The attack was shockingly swift, with estimates suggesting that the six murders occurred within a span of 15 to 30 seconds. After killing his parents, his sister Marilyn, and his nephews and niece, Robert Dreesman turned the gun on himself, taking his own life in a hallway just outside the dining room.
The bodies were discovered between noon and 1 p.m. after a family friend became concerned and alerted the authorities. The motive for the killings was never definitively established, though speculation from friends and investigators pointed towards jealousy and resentment on Robert Dreesman's part. It was suggested that he may have been envious of the attention his sister and her children received from his parents during their holiday visit. Described as a loner, Dreesman had recently moved back in with his parents after graduating from chiropractic college. Because the sole suspect in the deaths of Jason Chuang and his family was the perpetrator who subsequently committed suicide, no arrests were made in the case. The incident left the community of Algona in a state of shock and grief over the sudden and violent loss of an entire family.
