In the small town of Bayard, Iowa, a community of 550 people where violent crime was a rarity, the life of 37-year-old Kimberly Ann Ormsby Johnson, a female, came to a tragic end on April 30, 2007. A former resident of Auburn, Maine, Kimberly had moved to Bayard only a month prior, seeking a fresh start after filing for divorce from her estranged husband.
This move, however, did not provide the safety she likely sought.
On that fateful Sunday evening, Kimberly was shot and killed in her apartment. The violence of that night was not confined to her alone; a second individual, Gregory Allen White, aged 38, also lost his life in the same incident. The tragedy was further compounded by the fact that the events unfolded in the presence of Kimberly's 15-year-old daughter, who managed to escape the apartment and report the shootings.
The man responsible for this act of violence was her 42-year-old estranged husband, Johnny Lee Johnson. After the shootings, he surrendered to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The couple had met two decades earlier while he was serving in the Marine Corps and had been married since 1988, raising their children in the rural area of Coon Rapids, Iowa.
The marriage had been strained for some time. About a year before her death, Kimberly and her children had moved back to her home state of Maine. Although the family eventually reunited in Iowa, the marital problems persisted, culminating in Kimberly's decision to file for divorce and move to her own apartment in Bayard. This separation, meant to be a step towards a new life, tragically led to its violent end.
