On what began as a seemingly ordinary day, May 28, 2007, the life of 29-year-old Michael Shane Hill, a White male from Boone, Iowa, came to a tragic and violent end on the sheep farm near Ogden where he worked. In a desperate call to 911 at approximately 11:10 AM, an audibly injured Hill reported that he had accidentally shot himself. In a second call just minutes later, another gunshot was heard, and by the time authorities arrived, Hill was dead from gunshot wounds to his back and shoulder. The initial belief that his death was a tragic accident would soon unravel to reveal a sinister plot.
The investigation took a sharp turn when evidence of an affair surfaced between Hill's wife, Jessica Hill, and his best friend, Daniel Blair. Investigators discovered intimate messages between the two on Jessica's computer. This revelation shifted the focus of the investigation from an accidental shooting to a homicide. Authorities learned that Jessica and Blair's affair had been ongoing, even during the early years of the Hills' marriage when Blair was Michael's roommate. Phone records from the morning of the murder showed contact between Jessica and Blair, where she allegedly expressed that it would be easier if her husband were gone.
The unraveling of the conspiracy led to the arrests of Jessica Hill, Daniel Blair, and Blair's roommate, Aron Moss. Prosecutors argued that Jessica orchestrated the events that led to her husband's death. The investigation revealed that the shell casings found at the scene did not match the gun found with Michael Shane Hill. Daniel Blair eventually admitted his involvement to the police and implicated Aron Moss, claiming Moss was the one who pulled the trigger.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, all three were convicted for their roles in the murder. Daniel Blair was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Aron Moss was convicted of second-degree murder and received a 50-year prison sentence. Jessica Hill was initially found guilty of second-degree murder and also sentenced to 50 years. However, her conviction was later overturned on appeal in 2011 due to a ruling that some witness testimony was inadmissible hearsay. Subsequently, in November 2011, Jessica Hill pleaded guilty to lesser charges of conspiracy to commit murder and accessory after the fact, receiving a 12-year sentence. She was reportedly released on probation in January 2019.
