On a tragic spring night in Dubuque, Iowa, the life of 21-year-old Collin Brown, a White male, was violently cut short. In the early morning hours of April 2, 2016, a group of individuals forced their way into his home located in a mobile home park in the community of Key West, south of Dubuque. During the home invasion, Collin was shot. Despite being grievously wounded, he managed to flee to a neighbor’s home where he collapsed.
He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to identify several suspects involved in the deadly robbery and shooting. In May 2016, the Dubuque County Sheriff's Department announced the arrests of 18-year-old Imere Hall and 21-year-old Taylor Shaw, who were both charged with first-degree murder and robbery. A warrant was also issued for a third suspect, 19-year-old Tacari Minifee, on the same charges. Court documents later identified Minifee as the individual who shot Collin Brown. A fourth individual, Eric Campbell Jr., was also implicated in the crime.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of justice for Collin's death. Imere Hall was convicted of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery for his role in aiding and abetting the crimes. His conviction was later affirmed on appeal. Eric Campbell Jr. was also brought to trial and was ultimately convicted of manslaughter for his involvement in the events that led to Collin Brown's death. The initial charges against him had been first-degree murder and robbery. The resolution of the cases against Taylor Shaw and the shooter, Tacari Minifee, unfolded through the court system, marking the final chapters in a senseless act of violence that ended a young man's life.
