In the summer of 2021, the life of 18-year-old Robert Wayne Powell-Moore III was tragically cut short in Dubuque, Iowa. On the afternoon of Saturday, July 17, 2021, police responded to a report of a shooting near the intersection of 14th Street and Central Avenue. There they found Powell-Moore with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was quickly transported to UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation into the shooting revealed that the Black/African
American male had been involved in an altercation with two other teenagers in an alley behind 1401 Central Avenue. The incident was captured by city traffic cameras, which aided law enforcement in tracking the suspects to a residence on Jackson Street.
Following the investigation, a 15-year-old male and a 14-year-old female were taken into police custody. Both juveniles were charged with voluntary manslaughter and carrying weapons. Due to their status as minors, their names have not been publicly released, and they remain in juvenile detention pending court proceedings.
Robert Wayne Powell-Moore III had recently graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 2021 and had plans to play basketball for the University of Dubuque in the fall. His death was a shock to the community, and he is remembered by his family and friends.
