In the quiet, rural setting of Coggon, Iowa, a sense of unease settled over the community on the evening of February 1, 2017. A 9-1-1 call pierced the winter air just before 6 p.m., reporting a shooting at a residence on Seven Hills Road. When Linn County Sheriff's deputies and emergency responders arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of a young man lying in the yard.
