In the quiet community of Wever, Iowa, the discovery of a body in a local park on February 11, 2017, shattered the winter stillness. The deceased was identified as James Merlin Nelson, a 47-year-old White male from the nearby city of Fairfield. An investigation swiftly determined that Nelson's death was not an accident but a homicide, the result of gun violence. His body had been left in Indian Path Park, miles from where the fatal encounter took place.
The investigation into Nelson's death led authorities to Joseph Mayorga Jr., a 35-year-old man from Burlington. The tragic story that emerged was one of a heated argument that spiraled into a deadly rage. Inside the garage of Mayorga's Burlington home, he and Nelson were sitting in Mayorga's Chevrolet Impala when a remark Nelson made about Mayorga's wife ignited a fatal confrontation. In a fit of anger, Mayorga shot Nelson once in the eye with a. 38 caliber revolver.
Following the shooting, Mayorga drove with Nelson's body to Indian Path Park, a remote area near the Lee and Des Moines County line. There, he removed Nelson from the vehicle and abandoned him, leaving his body to be discovered by others. The subsequent investigation connected Mayorga to the crime, leading to his arrest and being charged with first-degree murder.
In a plea agreement with the Lee County Attorney's Office, Joseph Mayorga Jr. pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder.
