On the tumultuous night of May 31, 2020, in Davenport, Iowa, a 22-year-old biracial woman named Italia Marie Kelly was fatally shot as she was leaving a protest. The demonstration, one of many across the nation following the death of George Floyd, had turned unruly, prompting Kelly and a friend to depart. It was in the process of getting into a vehicle to go home that she was struck by a bullet.
