On a summer day in Eldridge, Iowa, the life of 28-year-old Caucasian female Jessica C. Bostrom was tragically cut short. On June 10, 2021, police were dispatched to her residence after a report of a shooting. Inside her home, they found Jessica deceased from a fatal gunshot wound to the head. In the immediate aftermath, Jessica's husband, Shane Bostrom, was not initially charged in connection with her death. However, he was arrested at the scene on several unrelated charges, including a controlled substance violation, child endangerment, a drug tax stamp felony, and obstructing prosecution. These charges were based on evidence discovered by investigators while they were processing the scene of the shooting. This allowed authorities to hold him in custody as they continued to piece together the events that led to Jessica's death.
As the investigation progressed, authorities uncovered sufficient evidence to directly link Shane Bostrom to the fatal shooting. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury. Initially, Shane claimed that the gun had discharged accidentally while he was cleaning it. However, he later entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to the reduced charge of second-degree murder. For his crime, Shane Bostrom was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Under the terms of his sentence, he must serve a mandatory minimum of 35 years before he can be considered for parole. He was also ordered to pay $150,000 to his late wife's estate.
