In the early summer of 2021, a concerning situation unfolded in Creston, Iowa, when 58-year-old Timothy Fechter, a white male, was reported missing. Family members contacted the Creston Police Department on June 20th after he had last been seen in the early morning hours at a local residence. The circumstances of his disappearance were immediately considered suspicious, especially given that Fechter had known medical conditions, prompting an active search by law enforcement.
The search
for Timothy Fechter came to a grim conclusion on July 1, 2021, when his body was discovered along a rural road in neighboring Adair County. An investigation involving the Division of Criminal Investigation, the Creston Police Department, and the Union and Adair County Sheriff's Offices began to unravel the events leading to his death. The state medical examiner later determined that Fechter's death was a homicide, caused by blunt force trauma and a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.
The investigation quickly focused on a member of Fechter's own family. After nearly two months, law enforcement arrested his younger brother, 43-year-old Dustin James Seley. Seley was the last person seen with Fechter on June 20th. Evidence gathered included clothes found at Fechter's home that a witness said Seley had been wearing; the clothes appeared to have been hand-washed, and a bloodstain was present. A sister of the two men told investigators that Seley had admitted to fighting with his brother, taking his phone, and leaving him on a rural road.
During legal proceedings, a harrowing account of Fechter's final moments emerged. Testimony revealed that Seley became enraged after his brother allegedly claimed to be the father of Seley's daughter. One witness testified that Seley told him he made Fechter get on his knees before shooting him in the back of the head and stomping on him. In December 2021, a jury found Dustin Seley guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During sentencing, Seley apologized, stating he had been high and drunk and had not intended to kill his brother that night.
