In the summer of 2022, the life of a young Black / African American man, 20-year-old Taiwan Marcus Jackson Jr., was tragically cut short in Dubuque, Iowa. On the evening of June 4, 2022, Jackson was fatally shot, a victim of gun violence that would later lead to a thorough investigation and a significant legal battle. The incident left a void in the lives of those who knew him, who remembered him as a passionate, intelligent, and caring individual with an extraordinary and funny personality
that could light up any room he entered.
The investigation into Jackson's death culminated in the arrest of Keywani D. Evans of Freeport, Illinois. Evans was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in connection with the fatal shooting. This set the stage for a weeklong trial in Dubuque County, where the prosecution presented its case built upon the testimony of over two dozen witnesses. The evidence and witness accounts painted a picture of the events that led to Jackson's untimely death.
In May 2024, a Dubuque County jury found Keywani D. Evans guilty on both counts of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery.
