In the crisp autumn air of October 5, 1909, Salt Lake City Reserve Officer Charles C. Riley, a 34-year-old male, was in the process of escorting two robbery suspects to jail. Just moments before, he had apprehended the pair in connection with an armed robbery. As they walked along State Street, near 180 South, the evening took a tragic turn in front of a crowd of onlookers outside the Orpheum Theater.
