In the quiet community of West Jordan, Utah, a devastating tragedy unfolded on December 17, 2009, claiming the life of 4-year-old White male Raiden Matern. The young boy, along with his 6-year-old brother Gabriel and their 31-year-old mother Melissa Ann Matern, were found deceased in their apartment in what was determined to be a triple murder-suicide.
The perpetrator of this horrific act was the boys' father and Melissa's estranged husband, 34-year-old Justin Zachariah Matern.
Investigations revealed that Justin had been experiencing marital and financial difficulties. In the time leading up to the incident, Melissa and her two sons had recently moved into the Willow Cove apartment complex where their bodies were discovered.
On the evening of the tragedy, Justin sent a series of text messages to friends and relatives, confessing that he had killed his family and intended to take his own life. These alarming messages prompted recipients to contact the police. Law enforcement was able to locate the family's new apartment and, upon entry, discovered the bodies of Raiden, Gabriel, and Melissa, all of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Justin Matern was also found deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In addition to the text messages, he had left a letter at his workplace detailing his intentions. There was no prior history of domestic violence reported between the couple, and the incident left friends, family, and the wider community in a state of shock and grief. The suspect in the deaths of Raiden, Gabriel, and Melissa Matern was confirmed to be Justin Matern, who took his own life after the killings. No other suspects were sought, and the case was closed as a murder-suicide.
