On a Monday morning in West Jordan, Utah, the life of 17-year-old Jacob Jeremy Hansen was tragically cut short. On October 4, 2021, the White male teenager was shot at his own home and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The incident unfolded around 10:25 a.m. in the vicinity of 3500 West and 8500 South, prompting a swift response from the West Jordan Police Department.
Jacob's mother was the one who placed the harrowing call to the police, reporting that her son had been shot.
Upon their arrival at the residence, officers discovered a grim scene. Inside the doorway, a handgun was found lying on the ground. The area just outside the front door was littered with three spent shell casings and a spent bullet slug, evidence of the violence that had just occurred. Inside, smeared blood on the wall and three more shell casings painted a more complete and tragic picture of the struggle that had taken place. Jacob was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but the severity of his wounds proved to be fatal.
The investigation into Jacob's death moved quickly, aided by video surveillance from a neighboring home. The footage showed three men arriving at the Hansen residence. Two of the men approached the front door while the third went around to the back of the house. Shortly after, the two men who had gone to the front were seen fleeing the scene. This crucial piece of evidence, combined with witness interviews, led police to identify a primary suspect.
The day after the shooting, West Jordan police arrested 19-year-old Cody Elijah Ivory. He was subsequently booked on multiple charges, including homicide, aggravated robbery, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. According to police, Ivory had allegedly told others of his plan to rob Jacob and had brought a gun with him to the teen's home. It is believed that Ivory went to the house under the guise of a drug transaction. An altercation ensued at the doorway, during which Ivory allegedly blocked the door with his arm when Jacob told him to leave. This confrontation escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting of Jacob Hansen.
