In the early morning hours of December 29, 2018, a dispute that began inside a St. George, Utah, bar tragically escalated, ending the life of 34-year-old Spencer Maluafiti Tafua. Tafua, a Black / African American male, was a father of four and a beloved figure in his community, known for his kind heart and infectious smile. He was a former high school football standout at Pine View High School and continued his career at Dixie State University.
Remembered as a protector by his loved ones, his death sent ripples of grief through the community.
The fatal encounter occurred outside the One and Only Bar, where a confrontation that started earlier spilled out into the street. Shortly after 1:00 a.m., police were called to the scene with reports of a man brandishing a firearm. Before officers could arrive, shots were fired, and Tafua was fatally wounded. He was rushed to Dixie Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. The senseless act of violence left his four young children without a father.
Responding officers quickly located and apprehended a suspect at the scene. Bronson Joseph Flynn, then 26 years old, was found in his running vehicle in the bar's parking lot with an assault rifle on the passenger seat. Flynn, a resident of Ivins, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with a litany of offenses. A witness identified him as the shooter. During questioning, authorities noted the smell of alcohol on his breath, and he was also found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.
Flynn was ultimately charged with first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault for pointing the weapon at two other individuals, and several misdemeanors including using a dangerous weapon in a fight, driving under the influence, and possession of a weapon while under the influence. In March 2020, a jury found Bronson Joseph Flynn guilty on all seven charges. He was later sentenced to prison for the murder of Spencer Tafua, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the St. George community.
