In the late hours of a Tuesday night in June 2019, emergency services responded to a call at a residence in Midvale, Utah, initially reported as an attempted suicide. Inside, they found 27-year-old Shaina Bigby with a life-threatening gunshot wound to her head. She was rushed to a local hospital in extremely critical condition and placed on life support.
Tragically, the young woman, a resident of Taylorsville, succumbed to her injuries the following day, on June 26, 2019.
As investigators from the Unified Police Department began to piece together the events of that night, they found that statements from those present at the home were inconsistent and did not align with the evidence at the scene. What was first considered a suicide attempt soon shifted into a homicide investigation. Detectives discovered that a domestic dispute had occurred between Shaina and her 40-year-old boyfriend, Cameron Lundgren, right before the shooting. Based on forensic evidence, including the bullet's trajectory from back to front and right to left, investigators deemed it highly unlikely that the wound was self-inflicted. A weapon was recovered from the room where Shaina was found.
In the days that followed, Cameron Lundgren was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder and felony discharge of a firearm. However, the case took another turn about two weeks later when Lundgren was released from custody. The District Attorney's office had not filed formal charges, citing a need for further evidence before proceeding. This development frustrated Shaina's family and friends, who took to social media to voice their desire for justice. While police stated that the investigation remained active and that Lundgren was still the primary suspect, later reports indicated that after a more prolonged investigation and an autopsy, authorities were considering the possibility that the death was self-inflicted. Lundgren maintained his innocence, stating he witnessed Shaina take her own life. The investigation into the precise circumstances of Shaina's death has remained complex and unresolved.
