On the evening of October 18, 1974, 17-year-old Melissa Anne Smith, a female high school senior, left a pizza parlor in Midvale, Utah. She had plans to stay the night at a friend's house, but when those plans fell through, she began the walk home. Tragically, she never arrived. Her disappearance sparked immediate concern, particularly as she was the daughter of the Midvale police chief, Louis Smith.
The community's fears were realized nine days later, on October 27, when deer hunters discovered her nude body in a mountainous area in Summit Park.
An autopsy revealed that Melissa had been brutally beaten and strangled. Evidence suggested that she may have been kept alive for up to seven days after her abduction. The investigation into her murder was extensive, given her father's position in law enforcement. Her case was one of several disappearances of young women in the area around that time, leading to fears of a serial predator.
The man responsible for Melissa's death was later identified as the notorious serial killer, Ted Bundy. Before his execution, Bundy confessed to her murder. He was first apprehended in 1975 on an aggravated kidnapping and attempted criminal assault charge. This arrest eventually led to him becoming a suspect in a growing list of unsolved homicides across multiple states. Bundy's reign of terror included two escapes from custody, during which he committed further murders before his final capture in 1978. In his confessions, he revealed disturbing details about his crimes, including post-mortem rituals he performed on his victims, such as washing their hair and applying makeup. While Bundy was convicted for other murders, his confession provided the ultimate resolution to the tragic case of Melissa Anne Smith.
