On April 30, 2020, Kyler John Smith, a 21-year-old Caucasian male from Myton, Utah, died from a gunshot wound. The incident that led to his death occurred at approximately 2 p.m. that day. Smith had reportedly been pounding on the door of his neighbor's trailer home.
The neighbor, identified as 59-year-old Michael Raymond Reyburn, told detectives that he was in the process of answering the door when the shotgun he was holding discharged through the door, striking Smith in the head.
Smith was transported to a hospital on the Wasatch Front where he died from his injuries early the next morning. Responding deputies found Reyburn on the floor inside his trailer with a sawed-off, double-barrel. 410 shotgun nearby. The trailer homes of Reyburn and Smith were separated by one other trailer.
Following the shooting, Michael Raymond Reyburn was arrested and booked into the Duchesne County Jail. He faced charges of manslaughter, carrying a concealed short-barreled shotgun, and transaction of a dangerous weapon as a restricted person. A search of Reyburn's trailer also led to the discovery of methamphetamine, marijuana, digital scales, and other drug paraphernalia, resulting in several drug charges.
In a related but separate incident that occurred hours before the fatal shooting, another individual, 19-year-old Nautika Malakhi Noon, was arrested. Noon is accused of going to Smith's trailer and threatening him with a pellet gun that resembled a high-caliber pistol. For this act, Noon was charged with aggravated assault.
