In the quiet city of Logan, Utah, the life of Johnathon Jacob Sadler, a 25-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short on July 14, 2014. Sadler was in a Logan apartment with a friend, 19-year-old MacKenzie Madden, shortly after midnight when the unthinkable happened. The front door of the apartment was violently kicked in, and they were confronted by 23-year-old Jared Jay Tolman. Tolman, armed with a rifle, proceeded to shoot both Sadler and Madden multiple times.
According to his family, Johnathon died while trying to protect a friend in need.
The tragic event was a murder-suicide carried out by Tolman, a member of the Utah Army National Guard. Logan Police investigators believe the motive was jealousy, stemming from Tolman's disapproval of Madden's relationships with other men, including Sadler. It was reported that Tolman and Madden had been texting prior to the shooting. After killing Sadler and Madden, Tolman fled the scene and went to another apartment in search of another man he believed had a connection with Madden.
When Tolman arrived at the second location and discovered the man was not there, he turned the gun on himself, ending his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two other people were present in the second apartment and alerted the authorities by calling 911. Police later found a suicide note in Tolman's apartment. As the sole suspect, Jared Jay Tolman, died by his own hand, no arrests were made in connection with the murders of Johnathon Jacob Sadler and MacKenzie Madden. The case was closed with the death of the perpetrator, leaving behind a devastating story of jealousy and loss.
