On a summer day in Millville, Utah, a conflict between two men at a construction site simmered with fatal consequences. A Hispanic / Latino male named Yovani Nieto Arellano, a 29-year-old construction worker, was involved in a dispute with his older coworker, 59-year-old Lorenzo Tena-Vasquez, on the morning of August 12, 2021. Following the confrontation, in which Tena-Vasquez claimed Arellano had threatened him, Tena-Vasquez left the job site.
He spent several hours at his residence, his anger and fear reportedly festering, before making a fateful decision.
Tena-Vasquez retrieved a handgun from his home and drove back to the construction site. He found Arellano in a basement room of the home they were working on. At that moment, Arellano was seated, defenseless and unarmed, looking at his phone. Despite his later claims of self-defense, Tena-Vasquez approached Arellano and opened fire, shooting him six to seven times. A witness to the tragic event reported hearing Arellano screaming "No!" as the shots rang out. The violence shattered the workday peace, leaving one man dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
When Cache County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they found Tena-Vasquez outside the home with blood on his clothing. He immediately admitted to the shooting and was taken into custody. Investigators found Arellano's body in the basement, confirming he had died from injuries consistent with the gunshot wounds. During an interview conducted in Spanish, Tena-Vasquez maintained that he acted out of fear, stating he felt it was better to shoot Arellano rather than wait for a potential threat to materialize at his own home.
Lorenzo Tena-Vasquez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Though he initially claimed the shooting was in self-defense, the evidence, including witness testimony and the fact that Arellano was unarmed and in a seated position, contradicted his account. Ultimately, Tena-Vasquez pleaded guilty to murder and felony discharge of a firearm. In October 2023, he was sentenced to serve a term of 15 years to life in the Utah State Prison for the killing of Yovani Nieto Arellano.
