In the quiet community of West Valley City, a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah, the life of 15-year-old Paula Paul Tupou Bloomfield, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short on January 13, 2022. A student at Hunter High School, Bloomfield was known for his love of football, playing quarterback for the school's team where he was seen as a leader.
He was the only son in a family with seven sisters and was cherished by his relatives, who remember his constant smile and kindness.
The day's events unfolded near the school, at the intersection of 4100 South and Mountain View Corridor. A dispute that had reportedly been simmering for over a year between two groups of students escalated into a physical altercation. Following an initial fight that was broken up by a passerby, a second confrontation occurred. It was during this second encounter that gunfire erupted, leading to the deaths of Bloomfield and his 14-year-old teammate, Tivani Lopati. A third student, 15-year-old Ephraim Asiata, was also shot and critically injured but ultimately survived.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, West Valley City police launched an investigation that quickly led to the identification of a suspect. A 14-year-old classmate of the victims was taken into custody. Investigators learned that the suspect had allegedly brought a 9mm handgun to school that day. He later told police that he and his friends had been harassed by the other group of students.
The 14-year-old suspect was subsequently charged with two counts of murder, discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, illegal discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice, among other charges. The case was filed in the 3rd District Juvenile Court. During court proceedings, the suspect denied the charges, and his attorney indicated an intention to argue self-defense. The community mourned the loss of the two young men, with memorials of balloons, posters, and candles marking the site of the tragedy. Family, friends, and teammates gathered for vigils to remember Bloomfield and Lopati, reflecting on their bright futures tragically extinguished.
