In a quiet Springville, Utah neighborhood on the morning of May 25, 2022, a distressing scene began to unfold. Michael Huff, a 75-year-old White/Caucasian male, was found deceased in his home under violent circumstances. The incident was initially reported as a medical emergency when his 33-year-old stepdaughter, Krista Mortensen, ran to a neighbor's home.
She claimed she needed help with her stepfather's feeding tube and ominously stated, "Mike is dying."
When paramedics arrived at the residence at 471 North 100 East, they discovered the situation was far from a simple medical issue. They found Huff unresponsive with a fatal gunshot wound to his head. A gun was discovered near his feet, and the medical personnel immediately requested police assistance, recognizing they were at a crime scene. As law enforcement arrived, the focus turned to Mortensen, who had become uncooperative. She had locked herself in an upstairs bedroom and refused to communicate with officers about her stepfather's welfare.
