In the early morning hours of November 18, 2023, the life of 23-year-old Caucasian male Michael “Mikey” Mayer was tragically cut short in Springville, Utah. Having just returned to his apartment at 216 S. 100 West after a shift at work, he was confronted in the parking lot shortly before 3 a.m. In a harrowing turn of events, Mayer was on a phone call with a friend who overheard the confrontation.
The friend later recounted to police hearing a man with a deep voice demanding money from Mayer.
The conversation between Mayer and his assailant was brief. Mayer informed the man that his money was in the driver's side door of his vehicle and urged his friend on the phone to call 911. Immediately after, the friend disconnected the call and dialed for help. The friend also alerted Mayer's brother, who lived in the same apartment complex. Rushing outside, the brother discovered Michael on the ground, having been shot multiple times. Mayer was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting was a lengthy standoff at the apartment building, which lasted for seven hours. SWAT team members were on the scene, and three adults were eventually taken into custody for questioning. One of the individuals, a 43-year-old woman named Amanda Bird, was arrested and later charged with obstruction of justice. Police stated that upon their arrival, they witnessed Bird appearing to hide from them and then running into an apartment when commanded to stop. However, the gunman responsible for Mayer's death was not immediately identified or apprehended.
Investigators have suggested that the attack on Mayer may not have been a random act of violence, but rather a targeted and premeditated crime. They believe the suspect was likely waiting for Mayer to arrive home. The investigation into his murder remains ongoing, and as of late 2024, no arrests had been made directly in connection with the homicide. In an effort to generate new leads, the Springville Police Department has offered a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Michael Mayer's death. His family remembers him as a kind and selfless person who "lived to serve others" and was deeply loved as a son, brother, and uncle.
