In the spring of 2015, the community of Fairfield, Connecticut, was struck by the tragic death of William Sapone, a 61-year-old Caucasian male. A husband and father, Sapone was a partner at a Monroe law firm and an active member of his community, chairing the Fairfield Woods Middle School Building Committee. His life, however, came to a sudden and heartbreaking end on April 15, 2015.
The circumstances leading to the discovery of his passing began when his wife reported him missing.
Sapone had gone out in his kayak on the Long Island Sound but never returned. This prompted a search involving the Westport, Fairfield, and Norwalk police departments, as well as the Coast Guard. His car was located at Burying Hill Beach, and eventually, his rowing scull was found on the shores of Cockenoe Island.
A foot search of the island led to the grim discovery of Sapone's body in the mud flats. An autopsy later confirmed that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was found near his body. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner officially ruled his death a suicide. Consequently, there were no arrests made nor any suspects sought in connection with his death.
Sapone was remembered as a dedicated family man and a man of service who spent a significant amount of his time trying to better his community. He was involved in the Democratic Town Committee and various town boards. His love for rowing on the Long Island Sound was well-known, making the location of his death all the more poignant for those who knew him.
