On a summer evening in Hartford, Connecticut, the life of 25-year-old Devon Mitchell, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 1, 2015, gunshots rang out on Blue Hills Avenue just before 9 p.m., marking the beginning of a grim chapter for the city, as this would become its 20th homicide of the year.
Shortly after the reports of gunfire, a private vehicle arrived at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center carrying Mitchell, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries approximately two hours later. At the time, Hartford's mayor condemned the killing as a "senseless act" and emphasized the city's commitment to preventing further violence with the help of state and federal partners.
In the years that have followed, the investigation into Devon Mitchell's death has unfortunately grown cold. His case is now listed among Connecticut's unsolved homicides.
