On a spring evening in Waterbury, Connecticut, the life of 24-year-old Corey Dawson, a Black/African American male from Windsor, was cut tragically short. The events of April 11, 2016, began with a physical altercation involving Dawson and a group of other men outside a bodega on Charles Street. What started as a confrontation quickly escalated, spilling out into the streets as both parties retreated to their vehicles.
A dangerous car chase then ensued through the city.
The pursuit came to a crashing halt near the intersection of Lounsbury Street and South View, where the vehicles collided and were disabled. In the moments that followed, the occupants of the cars emerged, and the conflict took a fatal turn. An individual fired multiple shots, and Dawson was struck in the head. Police responded to reports of a hit-and-run and a shooting just after 6 p.m., discovering Dawson's body in the driveway of a Lounsbury Street home.
Corey Dawson, a 2009 graduate of Windsor High School, was a father to two young sons, Corey Jr. and Zion. He was remembered for his love of music, football, and cars, especially his passion for his Honda Civic SI, which he often took to car shows. In the wake of his death, the Waterbury Police Department launched an investigation, interviewing witnesses who were in the area at the time of the shooting. However, despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The case remains open, and police have continued to urge anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. There has been no public identification of any suspect or suspects in his death.
