In the late hours of a summer night in Waterbury, Connecticut, the vibrant life of Dennis Santos, a 51-year-old male, was tragically cut short. On August 13, 2022, Santos, the proprietor of the Salsa Tropical Social Club, found himself in the midst of a volatile confrontation in the parking lot of his own establishment on Watertown Avenue. The dispute reportedly began inside the club when a man became agitated upon seeing a former girlfriend with another man.
The situation escalated and
moved outside, where Santos, known as a pillar of his community, attempted to intervene and de-escalate the conflict. It was during this attempt to restore peace that multiple gunshots were fired into the crowd. Santos was the one struck by the gunfire. He was quickly transported to Waterbury Hospital but succumbed to his injuries just before midnight. No one else was harmed in the incident.
In the immediate aftermath, Waterbury police launched an investigation that swiftly led them to a suspect. Ramon Rodriguez, a 44-year-old resident of Waterbury, was apprehended shortly after fleeing the scene. Officers also recovered a loaded firearm in his possession. Rodriguez was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges, including murder, reckless endangerment, and several weapons offenses. He was held on a $2 million bond.
Dennis Santos, who was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, had been an integral part of the Waterbury community for 36 years. He was remembered as a devoted family man with a passion for bringing people together to celebrate their heritage at his social club. His death left a profound void in the lives of his family, including his two children, and the many friends and patrons who knew him as the heart and soul of the local salsa scene.
