On the evening of May 16, 2016, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at the intersection of Campfield Avenue and Cowles Street in Hartford, Connecticut. When police arrived around 10:30 p.m., they discovered a grim scene. Twenty-two-year-old Joshua Cortez was found lying in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inside a nearby parked car, first responders found 23-year-old Hispanic/Latina female, Alysha Ocasio, suffering from several gunshot wounds to her torso. She was rushed to Hartford Hospital, but tragically succumbed to her injuries. The couple, who shared a young daughter, had their lives violently cut short.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to one primary suspect: 20-year-old Joseph Silva. According to witness accounts, Silva approached Cortez and shot him in the head. As Cortez fell, Silva fired several more rounds, reportedly shouting, "This is how Joseph Silva does it." He then turned his attention to the car where Alysha was sitting and fired multiple shots into the vehicle, killing her. Authorities believed the motive stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Silva and Cortez, with Alysha being an innocent bystander caught in the deadly escalation.
In the days following the murders, Joseph Silva was apprehended by the Hartford police. He was charged with two counts of murder. Another individual, Silva's girlfriend, Kailei Opalacz, was also implicated. She later pleaded guilty to first-degree hindering prosecution for her role in helping Silva attempt to escape after the shootings. Silva's case proceeded to trial, where a jury deliberated for a remarkably short 18 minutes before finding him guilty of murder and murder with special circumstances in October 2018. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release. Despite the conviction, Silva has maintained his innocence and planned to appeal the verdict.
