In the early hours of a Monday morning in New London, Connecticut, the life of Joshua Fine, a 27-year-old Black / African American man, was cut short. On April 2, 2018, police responded to a report of a shooting just after 1 a.m. in the vicinity of Elm Street and Garfield Avenue. Arriving at the scene, officers found Fine on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead by a physician.
Joshua, a graduate of New London High School, was remembered as a loving person with a large personality and a contagious smile. He was the youngest of eleven siblings and was at his happiest when surrounded by his family and loved ones. Friends and family recalled his unique sense of humor and his love for dancing. He was an active member of the Pentecostal Rescue Mission Church of New London.
The investigation into Fine's death led New London Police to a suspect later that month. David Carson Edwards, 39, also known as "DC Edwards" or "Jerzey," was arrested and charged with the murder of Joshua Fine. The arrest was made without incident at his residence on Steward Street. Edwards was held on a $1,500,000 bond.
Further details emerged suggesting the tragic incident stemmed from a seemingly minor dispute earlier in the evening. Reports indicated that an altercation began over a comment made during a game of pool at a local American Legion. It was alleged that a comment from Fine's girlfriend to Edwards led to jealousy and a physical fight between the two men inside the bar. Later that night, they reportedly met at a different location where Edwards is accused of fatally shooting Fine.
