In the early hours of September 2, 2018, the life of 28-year-old Hispanic/Latino male Matthew Diaz was tragically cut short in Waterbury, Connecticut. At approximately 3:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a shooting near 91 Berkeley Avenue, in the area of the Berkeley Heights housing complex. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Diaz suffering from a gunshot wound to his back.
Emergency medical personnel administered CPR at the scene before rushing him to St.
Mary's Hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. Investigators believe Diaz was fleeing across a parking lot within the complex when he was shot. The incident is thought to be connected to gang activity, as the Berkeley Heights complex is known as territory claimed by the 960 gang. It is suspected that members of this gang, who were reportedly hosting a party that night, may have targeted Diaz.
