On a summer morning in New Haven, Connecticut, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of 33-year-old Richard Rodriguez. The Hispanic male was in a parking lot at 88 York Street on July 17, 2020, when he sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Police received a report of the shooting at approximately 10:13 a.m. and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Rodriguez wounded and unresponsive.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead a short time later. A Yale University police officer was the first to arrive at the parking lot and, along with New Haven officers, began to piece together the events that had transpired.
At the scene, police located and detained a man who was present during the incident. That individual was identified as 39-year-old Michael Karbownik. He was taken into custody without incident and was subsequently charged with criminal possession of a firearm. The investigation into the death of Richard Rodriguez, who had previous ties to the Hartford area, was announced as ongoing.
