John Randall Patrick Jr., a 22-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on June 30, 2021, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The incident occurred in a second-floor bedroom of an apartment on Howard Avenue. Police responded to a report of a person shot just before 5 p.m. and found Patrick unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Initially, police described the shooting as a targeted, isolated incident, stating that the victim knew the shooter.
Friends remembered Patrick as a young man who had grown up in a local church and had been a member of the children's choir.
The investigation into Patrick's death quickly led to a person of interest. On July 9, 2021, 21-year-old Giovanni Ramos surrendered to the police. Authorities charged him with second-degree manslaughter, theft of a firearm, tampering with evidence, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit, and use of a firearm in a felony. It was revealed that Patrick and Ramos were best friends. According to the arrest warrant, the two had been handling a handgun, unaware that it was loaded, when the weapon discharged and fatally wounded Patrick.
In September 2023, Giovanni Ramos pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter with a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a pistol without a permit. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in his best friend's death. During the sentencing, a remorseful Ramos stated that Patrick was like an older brother to him and that he didn't deserve a good life. Patrick's father, who had also recently lost his mother and daughter, expressed his profound grief and anger, telling Ramos, "You say you were my son's friend but you weren't his friend." The death of John Randall Patrick Jr. was recorded as the city's ninth homicide of 2021.
